My husband laughed at me as I read the last fifty or so pages on the couch, because I was yelling at the book quite a bit. Know that this book did make me tear up a couple of times, and made me cheer out loud at least twice. I would prefer to preserve those for readers. There were quite a few zigs and zags that I didn’t anticipate and really enjoyed. I’m not going to go into more details from here, because it would be spoiler-y and I really don’t want to ruin this book for anyone. And, naturally, she’s out to find out the truth about her father, and what really happened that day at the Battle of Alta. In her spare time, because why not, she repairs the ship in hopes that she’ll be able to fly it when she graduates, since Ironsides is unlikely to let her fly no matter how well she does in her training. So, she lives in a cave she found by chance, sleeping in the cockpit of a crashed ancient starfighter. She can’t join her Flight in the mess hall, she can’t bunk in the academy, and she can’t use the learning resources beyond her classroom. Spensa is allowed to take her Flight class, and nothing else. It’s her one chance at redemption and she refuses to let it pass her by, no matter how difficult the Admiral makes her life. That is, until Captain Cobb, callsign: Mongrel, accepts Spensa into his classroom. They sabotaged Spensa’s test, and suggested she take a job elsewhere. Spensa has trained and studied her whole life to get into the DDF and prove them wrong about her dad, but Admiral Ironsides won’t give her the chance. Her father abandoned his Flight during the Battle of Alta, and was subsequently shot down for his cowardice. You see, Spensa, aka Spin, is the daughter of the DDF’s only coward. But it doesn’t matter, because the Defiant Defense Force has zero interest in letting her fly.
Spensa is the sixteen year old girl who just passed her pilot’s exam. I loved Spensa and the world she lives in, which I should have expected Sanderson does world-building better than just about anybody else in the genre right now.

It’s full of amazing characters, hilarious dialogue, and a plot that absolutely held me captive. This book reminded me why so many readers love Brandon’s books. That is, until I actually got a few pages into it. And I wasn’t even all that excited to read Skyward. There’s just such a cultish fervor surrounding Sanderson and his books, and I am definitely guilty of such behavior. I think that last signing I went to (for Oathbringer) really turned me off to his books, through no fault of his own. I’ve been slowing down on my mad dash of consuming Sanderson content lately. Which, it turns out, was a sound decision. And if there are holds, you can’t renew. So, instead of accruing fines on a book I intended to buy anyway, I just went and bought the dumb thing. The thing about Sanderson books is that they’re very popular, and holds abound. Gollancz has announced that Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning will be released in the UK in October 2015 and January 2016 respectively.I wasn’t able to finish reading Skyward before the book was due back to the library.
Sanderson then plans to work on the next Mistborn trilogy, tentatively set in a world that mirrors the 1980s (or, he hints, there’s a possibility that he’ll write something set in an amalgam of the ’40s.) The trilogy will include: Shadows of Self, Bands of Mourning, and The Lost Metal. The final three volumes announced here will be feature a more traditional trilogy structure, with The Alloy of Law acting as a prequel/set-up narrative.

UPDATE – 12-19-2014: Sanderson has revealed that there’s actually a third Mistborn novel, tentatively titled The Lost Metal, coming.
Given my enjoyment of the first volume, The Alloy of Law, I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of fun Sanderson has with Wax and Wayne on their next outing(s). Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning are the concluding volumes in Sanderson’s Mistborn pedantically-named spinoff series, the Wax and Wayne Mistborn tetralogy. Shadows of Self will hit shelves in October 2015, but Bands of Mourning won’t arrive until January 2016. Tor Books’s proclamation that Sanderson’s releasing two novels next year is a tad misleading. “If there’s one thing we’ve learned in ten years of working with Brandon, it’s that he almost always delivers more than we’ve asked for and that he loves to surprise us,” said Sanderson’s agent, Moshe Feder. Sanderson fans were already aware that the first of these novels, Shadows of Self, was due for a 2015 release, but the announcement of a 2015 release for Bands on Mourning (which is, like, the most post-ironic black metal band collaborative name ever) is a pleasant surprise. “Tor Books is eye-wideningly excited to announce that TWO new Mistborn novels by Brandon Sanderson will be released in late 2015!” announced Tor.com today.
